Description

What Is Durolane Injection?

Durolane is a single-injection hyaluronic acid gel designed to alleviate pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. This hyaluronic acid-based treatment is ideal for patients who haven’t responded to other non-pharmacological treatments.

Durolane leverages NASHA technology, which uses non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) to provide effective pain relief and improved joint function. HA, a naturally occurring molecule, lubricates and cushions healthy joints. When injected into osteoarthritic joints, Durolane offers immediate pain relief and supports joint mobility.

What Is Durolane Injection Used for?

Durolane is primarily used to treat knee and hip osteoarthritis but can also be administered for other joints such as shoulders or ankles.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where cartilage deteriorates, leading to bone friction, pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Durolane injections restore joint fluid balance, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain with a single injection, thanks to hyaluronic acid – a key component of joint fluid, which lubricates and cushions joints, supports cartilage and bone growth, and reduces inflammation.

Who Is the Manufacturer of Durolane?

Durolane is produced by Bioventus, a company specialising in orthobiologics to enhance mobility for osteoarthritis patients.

Durolane Injection Main Ingredients

  • Stabilised Sodium Hyaluronate (20mg)
  • Sodium Chloride (9mg)
  • Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (0.03mg)
  • Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate Dihydrate (0.14mg)
  • Water for Injection

Package Contains

The package contains one 3mL pre-filled syringe of Durolane with a concentration of 60mg/3ml. Each syringe is ready for use and contains the specified amount of product. This ensures a precise and convenient dosage for the treatment.

Storage Conditions

Durolane should be stored in its original packaging between 0-30 ºC (32-86ºF).

Mode of Administration

If joint effusion is present, remove it before proceeding. Use the syringe contents immediately after opening the packaging. Inject the entire syringe’s contents directly into the knee’s synovial capsule.

For bilateral treatments, use a new syringe for each knee and do not reuse syringes. An increase in injection pressure might suggest improper needle placement outside the joint or overfilling of the joint.

Post-Treatment Care

After a Durolane injection, you might experience mild pain or soreness in the knee joint. Applying ice packs can help alleviate these symptoms.

Post-treatment, it’s recommended to refrain from strenuous activities for a day or two. Avoid putting strain on the knee by steering clear of activities like jogging, playing soccer or tennis, heavy lifting, and prolonged standing. Temporary pain or swelling in the knee is common after a hyaluronic acid injection.

Benefits and Results of Using Durolane

Clinical trials have highlighted several significant benefits, including:

  • A notable decrease in joint pain in the knee and hip, with improved mechanical function
  • It only requires a single injection for effective treatment
  • Quick and simple administration – in a GP’s consulting room, taking just 10 minutes
  • Long-lasting results, longer than other hyaluronic acid products
  • Minimal adverse reactions

How Long Does Durolane Injection Last?

Durolane provides effective pain relief and functional restoration for up to six months, with duration varying based on individual factors such as weight, age, and physical activity levels.

Do You Need a Prescription for Durolane?

Yes, you need a prescription to obtain Durolane. This treatment should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. You can purchase Durolane through your doctor’s office or a local pharmacy. If Durolane is covered by your insurance, the pharmacy will require your insurance card, a prescription, and the PDIN or DIN to bill your insurance company directly.

Is Durolane Treatment Painful?

Most patients report minimal pain or discomfort during the injection, but some doctors may apply a topical numbing agent to the skin before the treatment to ensure patient comfort.

Potential Side Effects of Durolane Injection
