Confused About Mesotherapy? This is Mesotherapy, Explained

What is Mesotherapy?

You may have heard the term Mesotherapy in a couple of different contexts. Sometimes mesotherapy refers to injections to remove fat from the body, and sometimes mesotherapy refers to injections for facial rejuvenation. Although the two types of treatments are quite different, there is one thing they both have in common: they involve a series of small injections. Mesotherapy refers to a treatment where the practitioner injects a solution into the tissue in small amounts, with multiple injections across a particular area, no matter the solution that is injected.

Mesotherapy for Facial Rejuvenation

Mesotherapy for facial rejuvenation involves a series of microinjections across the face, but the same solutions can also rejuvenate skin on the neck, the decolletage which is the area between the neck and the chest, and the backs of the hands. These injections usually include hyaluronic acid. Practitioners usually use hyaluronic acid to add volume beneath skin, reducing the look of wrinkles, but in these smaller volumes, hyaluronic acid is an effective moisturizer. Instead of adding volume, smaller injections of hyaluronic acid can help hold moisture within the skin. This helps give skin long-lasting hydration from within.

Many brands of mesotherapy injections also include a list of other ingredients to go along with the hyaluronic acid. The idea is that these ingredients can provide skin the nourishment it needs to grow and thrive, and these injections deliver nutrients right where they are needed. These other ingredients may include vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C or vitamin D. Vitamin C plays a role in collagen synthesis, and this collagen is what helps give skin strength and thickness, helping to reduce the look of wrinkles. Vitamin D supports skin regeneration, which can also help reduce damage like wrinkles along with hyperpigmentation. Some mesotherapy solutions include amino acids, which provide the building blocks to make proteins in the body. Among other things, amino acids can stimulate collagen and elastin production in the body, which helps increase skin strength and elasticity. There may also be antioxidants in mesotherapy products, which help protect skin from free radicals that can cause damage.

These mesotherapy injections for facial rejuvenation are most suitable for skin that is younger, for prevention of wrinkles, or older skin that has only minimal damage such as fine lines. This is because the hyaluronic acid in these injections does not have the ability to fill large wrinkles, but the added moisture can reduce the look of fine lines and help keep skin moisturized. The other added ingredients can help to gradually improve the skin’s strength and elasticity, reduce the look of dark spots, and other activities to help treat and prevent signs of aging and sun damage.

Mesotherapy for Fat or Cellulite Removal

The other types of treatment you may hear called mesotherapy are for fat or cellulite removal. In these treatments, practitioners inject a special solution into an area affected by fat or cellulite. The series of injections across the area can deliver the solutions to where they are needed to target the area of stubborn fat or of uneven skin.

In fat removal, practitioners often inject deoxycholic acid, which is an enzyme that helps break down fat cells. These cells release their lipids, which are then eliminated from the body. This reduces the amount of fat in the treated area, helping to give the body a more contoured look.

For cellulite removal, practitioners may inject a solution with a cocktail of ingredients, possibly including amino acids. These ingredients may help to remove toxins present in the cellulite and they may help to increase circulation to the area, restructuring the adipose tissue. This restructuring can help reduce the irregular, orange-peel look on the skin.

AQUALYX®

Fat-dissolving injections AQUALYX®, similar to KYBELLA®, contains deoxycholic acid. This is similar to a natural enzyme in the body that breaks down fat, and these injections are appropriate for removing stubborn fat deposits on the chin, abdomen, back, thighs, hips, breasts, and other areas.

ALIDYA

Correcting injection ALIDYA contains amino acids and other ingredients for treating cellulite. This solution is suitable for areas like the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees, and arms.

Mesotherapy Technique

The mesotherapy technique involves a series of injections, each depositing a small amount of solution within the skin. The amount injected each time, and the depth varies by product, but the injections are usually spaced evenly with a large number of injections covering a particular area.

This helps to evenly distribute the product evenly across the desired area. The use of the term mesotherapy can be confusing, applying to both facial rejuvenation treatments and fat or cellulite-removal treatments. However, the term simply refers to the technique used, injecting small amounts to cover a specific area of the body. Whether targeting the face or other areas of the body, these treatments can deliver ingredients directly into the affected area of skin.
